Applying AI to Real-World Utility Challenges through IERE Collaboration

Through IERE, CLP has advanced AI applications in utilities, from image generation to object detection, while fostering global collaboration, knowledge-sharing, and practical solutions to industry challenges.

CHAN Kam Wong, Edward

Senior AI / Machine Learning Engineer,
CLP

CLP joined IERE in 2001 and has been an Executive Member since 2014. My journey with IERE began through collaborative AI initiatives in the utility sector. I had the opportunity to contribute to two key events. Firstly, I supported EPRI in developing a generative deep learning model to create synthetic insulator images. Secondly, I applied object detection models to identify H-frames in transmission towers. I later shared my experience on these projects during IERE-hosted webinars and gained the opportunity to engage with a broad community of experts.

As IERE is a worldwide organisation for exchanging new electricity and energy-related technologies as well as R&D information, CLP continues to work with IERE on projects in the joint research and development programme, such as the Technology Foresight Report, and on AI and power device life diagnosis projects. By joining IERE, I gained opportunities to use AI to develop solutions to real-world challenges for power utilities. I was able to connect with professionals who are passionate about solving problems in our industry using cutting-edge technologies.

IERE is focused on practical issues for power utilities and the quality of industry-specific discussions on this unique forum cannot be easily replicated elsewhere. The organisation fosters knowledge-sharing and collaboration, enabling members to identify common challenges and work together on innovative solutions.

I find that IERE members are genuinely interested in leveraging deep learning to address power utility challenges. The events are well organised and provide a great platform for exchanging ideas and showcasing real-world applications.

I hope to see more companies join IERE events and conduct joint R&D projects, which will help diversify use cases. Expanding the community will enrich the dialogue and accelerate the development of effective solutions to problems in our industry.
