History
Establishment and Purpose of IERE
The International Electric Research Exchange (IERE) was established in 1968 with the goal of promoting international collaboration in electric power research. Its foundation was initiated by MATSUNAGA Yasuzaemon and FUKUDA Setsuo of the Central Research Institute of Electric Power Industry in Japan.
The organization aimed to support the development of electric power businesses and inform management strategies in each country through the exchange of R&D information and the promotion of joint research.
At its inception, participating organizations included power-related institutions from Japan, the United States, and Europe. In 1969, Canada joined, followed by Mexico and Brazil in 1983, further expanding IERE’s international network.
Transition to Renewed IERE
Since its founding, IERE has fostered international research collaboration and information exchange across the entire electric power supply chain, including generation, transmission, and distribution. It has contributed significantly to the development of cooperative frameworks within the global power industry.
However, the 1990s brought significant changes to the energy landscape, such as the liberalization of electricity markets, rapid economic growth in emerging and developing countries, and escalating global environmental challenges.
In response to these shifts, the original IERE concluded its operations on December 31, 2000. A newly restructured organization, continuing under the name "IERE," was launched on January 1, 2001.
Under this new framework, electric power companies and manufacturers from both developed and developing countries now participate as members, with activities supported by membership fees. The organization also established a central secretariat in Japan, and restructured its membership system, board of directors, and domestic operations.
While preserving its founding mission, IERE continues to serve as a non-profit international platform for research collaboration and knowledge exchange in the power sector.
